Lake Las Vegas Resort hosts triathlon

SPECIAL TO REAL ESTATE

Top area athletes meet today for a triathlon and duathlon competition at Lake Las Vegas Resort in Henderson. More than 300 participants are expected, according to Danny Murphy, 2001 Lake Las Vegas Triathlon champion and a 2002 participant.

"Although the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon is a short race, the difficulty level is high because it's a sprint race, which means the athlete's heart rate will be at maximum levels throughout the event," Murphy said. "To prepare for this type of event, competitors average a minimum of three to four sessions of 60-90 minutes of exercise per week. I would encourage the community to watch today's event because both the triathlon and the duathalon symbolize dedication, health and fitness in a beautiful setting."

The race starts at 7:30 a.m. and is expected to end by noon.

The triathlon begins at Reflection Bay Golf Club with a 1k swim in the 320-acre Lake Las Vegas; continues with a 26k bike ride around the resort's golf courses and lake; and concludes with a 6.4k run through the resort.

Participants also have the option to register for an alternative competition, the Lake Las Vegas Duathalon, which consists of a 3k run, a 26k bike ride and an additional 6.4k run.

Participants must complete four triathlons over the course of the year to qualify for an $8,000 cash prize.

Spectators are encouraged to cheer on the athletes while enjoying the resort's scenic landscape, and event organizers will be on hand to direct fans to the viewing areas.

"Lake Las Vegas Resort's natural terrain, temperate climate and picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for this competition," said R.F. Boeddeker, chairman and president of Transcontinental Corp., developer of the resort. "The resort offers residents and guests numerous recreational activities, whether it's sailing, fishing, swimming, golfing, hiking, bicycling or even just relaxing. The Lake Las Vegas Triathlon showcases the extensive opportunities available for outdoor activity at the resort."

A full-service marina complements Nevada's largest privately owned lake. Facilities include a boat launch; store; boat cleaning, maintenance and refreshment services; new boat sales; and boat and water-toy rentals.

The private SouthShore Yacht & Beach Club is adjacent to the marina, and provides a beach, picnic and lawn, outdoor pool and spa, fitness area, tennis and basketball facilities, a meeting room and banquet facilities.

"We have made our vision a reality by offering visitors and residents the world's finest golf courses, upscale hotels and residences, as well as luxurious amenities, all centered around a serene lake," Boeddeker said.

Ranked No. 28 on Golf Digest's list of the "Top 75 Golf Resorts in America," Lake Las Vegas Resort features two Jack Nicklaus-designed golf courses: the private SouthShore Golf Club and the public Reflection Bay Golf Club. Opening this year is The Falls Golf Club, a public course designed by Tom Weiskopf. Planned to open in 2004 is the Tom Fazio-designed Rainbow Canyon Golf Club.

The Hyatt Regency at Lake Las Vegas Resort features 496 rooms including 47 suites, a fitness center and casino.

SouthShore, a 550-acre gated development, offers custom lots in several enclaves with views of the lake, mountains and golf courses. Prices start from the $300,000s to more than $2 million. Italian-style waterfront villas are situated on a secluded peninsula, while executive homes are set in the hills overlooking the lake. Golf villas align the SouthShore Golf Club.

Adjacent to Reflection Bay Golf Club on the northern shore are three distinct residential enclaves, ranging in price from $400,000 to more than $1.5 million. Featured are semicustom townhomes, single-family homes and European-style villas.

Montelago Village, a Mediterranean-themed shopping and dining experience for residents and guests, is under construction and expected to open early next year. The village is also home to a Ritz-Carlton Hotel, which is also scheduled to open in early 2003 with 350 rooms, as well as 44 suites and two Ritz-Carlton Suites. A Florentine-style bridge will provide passage from one shore to the other, and also house 75 Ritz-Carlton Club rooms. Additional amenities will include a world-class spa, casino, boutiques, waterside restaurants and cafes, office space and condominiums.
