Buyers `escape' to Sun City Anthem

Sun City Anthem residents Mary Ann Brim, a former schoolteacher, and Del Brim, a retired industrial engineer, are convinced that Nevada's warm desert weather and even warmer friendships are more desirable than the colder climate they left behind when they moved to Henderson from Moline, Ill., three years ago.

"We were looking for better weather," Mary Ann Brim said.

The builder influenced their decision to move to the age-qualified community with their British shorthair cats, Abby and Gusto.

"Del Webb had a good reputation. It was well-established in other areas, and it puts out a quality product. My husband used to be an independent contractor, so he knew something about quality building. We were impressed," Brim said.

The couple were seeking a change in lifestyle.

"We found people to be very friendly ... We really enjoy living here. Like us, almost everybody who moves to Sun City Anthem comes from places where they had established relationships. I knew nobody when I moved here, but the sewing and quilting club changed that," said Brim, who serves as the club's president.

"We sew for several charities in the area. We do our own projects, offer sewing classes for members, and hold workshops to sew items for sale to buy more cloth and supplies."

The club also sews for the Linus Blankets Program, which distributes blankets throughout the area.

"We also make baby blankets for the Nathan Adelson Hospice for its Center for Compassionate Care and teach a sewing after-school program at Hinman Elementary School," she said.

The community is home to the Revere at Anthem Golf Club, which offers two championship courses: the Lexington and the Concord.

"Del golfs at least once a week, sometimes twice," Brim said.

Anthem Center serves as a venue for special events, club meetings and dining at Trumpets Restaurant and Lounge, which is open to the public. The facility also offers a fitness center with exercise equipment, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, and wellness programs.

"When I have time in the summer, I take the aqua aerobics classes. I also like the treadmills and the walking track," Brim said. "Del likes to play bocce there."

Twelve models are offered, ranging from 1,496 to 3,175 square feet and priced from the low $200,000s to more than $500,000.

To visit, take Eastern Avenue south, two miles past St. Rose Parkway, turn left on Anthem Parkway and then turn right on Alexandria Drive. Models are open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
