Star softball player shines in Summerlin
Whether she is on the softball field at The Trails Park or The Meadows School, Lisa Curran has scored big for her team and the Summerlin master-planned community. Curran, a six-year resident of The Trails village and third baseman/catcher for the Mustang's varsity softball team, has been named the state high school Division 2A Most Valuable Player for two years. She also played a key role in her team's success at the state softball tournament in 2003, when she hit the game-winning home run to clinch the school's first state softball championship. Meadows Coach Chris Kaempfer said Curran's achievements earned her post-season recognition as a member of the All-State Softball team, making her the first small-school player to receive such an honor. "This honor is all the more special because of the very high academic standards at The Meadows School," Kaempfer said. "Lisa is an all-star both on and off the field and a pleasure to have on the team." "Helping my team win the championship and being named MVP has been great," Curran said. "It has been an honor to represent both my school and the Summerlin community." Curran has played softball since age 6 and earned varsity letters in the sport the past three years. In addition to her achievements on the field, Curran, a senior, has lettered in varsity volleyball and basketball. During summer breaks, she competed in tournaments across the country with her American Softball Association travel team. "Lisa is a shining example of how the community promotes active living and quality education," Tom Warden, a spokesman for The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin, said. "With more educational choices than any other community in Las Vegas, and our abundance of recreational space and parks, Summerlin provides the ideal environment for student athletes such as Curran to thrive." Curran plans to attend Villanova University in Philadelphia on an athletic scholarship in the fall. Her older brother, Patrick, played football for The Meadows and earned rookie of the year honors in the New England Small College Athletic Conference in his first season at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. Younger brother, John, plays baseball and football at The Meadows. Summerlin ranked as the nation's best-selling master-planned community for much of the past decade. It aligns the western edge of the Las Vegas Valley and is comprised of villages. Amenities include trails, schools, houses of worship, medical facilities, cultural facilities, business parks and nearly 120 model homes. Single-family homes, townhomes and condominiums are priced from the mid-$200,000s to more than $700,000. Custom-home sites in The Ridges village are priced from the $400,000s to more than $1 million. Monthly rent for apartments starts from the low $800s. For more information, visit www.reviewjournal.com/real estate and click on the Summerlin link.
