Sun City hikers seek to preserve mountain range

The hiking club is one of the largest clubs at Sun City Anthem. Formed by three-year residents Mike and Pat Carey, the club's membership totals nearly 230.

Having hiked in dozens of countries worldwide, the couple chose to live in the age-qualified community in Henderson because of its proximity to local and regional hiking areas. They are especially fond of visiting the nearby McCullough mountain range.

Mike Carey and other residents have been coordinating with Del Webb Communities, the city of Henderson and other entities to preserve the mountain range for nonmotorized recreation, such as hiking, mountain biking and equestrian use.

"Our goal is to build trails with minimal environmental impact in the northern McCullough range," Carey said. "There are great hiking opportunities for people of just about any skill level.

"Del Webb has been especially supportive and even drafted a plan for a trail system as part of the Anthem master plan," he said. "They are making significant contributions to create a trail that starts in the Coventry community, winds around Anthem Country Club and eventually comes to Sun City Anthem."

The hiking club also traverses Red Rock Canyon, Mount Charleston and the Lake Mead area.

"And, within a few hours, we can also visit beautiful national parks such as Zion, Bryce, Death Valley and Mojave. Sun City Anthem is a great community in a great location," Carey said.

Nineteen models are available at the community, measuring from 1,080 to 3,009 square feet and larger through the Gold Key program. Homes are priced from the low $140,000s to more than $500,000.

Resident amenities include Anthem Center, a 77,363-square-foot facility that offer social and recreational opportunities. It also houses Trumpets Restaurant and Lounge, which is open to the public.

To visit the model village, take Eastern Avenue south, two miles past St. Rose Parkway. The sales office is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
