Anthem resident to vie in blackjack tourney

While many people in Las Vegas dream of hitting it big, Sun City Anthem resident Henry Tamburin has a chance to do just that.

Tamburin recently advanced to the finals of a million-dollar blackjack tournament and will compete this month in Las Vegas against more than 190 winners from the yearlong event.

"This is my first ever million-dollar blackjack tournament," said the veteran card player, writer and gambling instructor.

Tamburin has published several books, lectured on how to play to win, and conducts workshops at the community's Anthem Center.

"I offer classes at Anthem on general casino gambling and how to improve the chances of winning."

He said he wasn't always a gambling expert.

"I came to Las Vegas on a whim in 1969," Tamburin said, adding he lost all his gambling money within a short time.

"When I got home, I studied the game and dived into strategies."

His hobby later turned into a business. Tamburin and his wife, Linda, operate blackjack schools in New Jersey, and also publish a newsletter.

The Tamburins, who have a home in Greensboro, N.C., purchased a home in Las Vegas after years of visiting.

"When we saw Anthem we said `this is for us.'" And Anthem Center is a beautiful facility that has something for everyone. I use the track, exercise equipment, and swimming pools every day we're in Nevada," he said.

The center offers fitness, social and recreational opportunities for residents, along with Trumpets Restaurant, which is open to the public.

Tamburin said he plans to learn how to play golf to take advantage of The Revere at Anthem Golf Club's two championship 18-hole golf courses.

Homes are priced from the high $190,000s.

To visit, take Eastern Avenue south, two miles past St. Rose Parkway, turn left on Anthem Parkway and then turn right on Alexandria Drive. Models are open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
