Rolladen shutters beat heat, crime

Rolladen Rolling Shutters owner Fran Minnozzi recommends Las Vegans plan for the warmer months ahead, which are usually accompanied by a rise in crime.
"Every year people tend to wait just a little too long," said Minnozzi, who claims her product helps reduce power bills by 35 to 54 percent and provides a barrier against burglars. "It's so much better to get your shutters now, because the homeowner will be prepared and not have to rush."
Minnozzi, who has been selling the shutters locally for more than 15 years, said her business gets busier once the heat hits the Las Vegas Valley.
"People simply don't think about the heat, if they move into their home during the cooler months," she said. "And very few people think about crime until they have been victimized. There is absolutely no better way to have your vacation ruined than by a break-in."
Milt and Edith Norman, northwest Las Vegas residents, said the aluminum foam-filled slats are so effective that they have reduced their power bill to an average of $42 for a 2,400-square-foot single-story home.
"In many cases, our customers are seniors who simply cannot afford high power bills. The shutters keep your home more comfortable, lower your power bill and add years to your air conditioning unit at the same time," Minnozzi said.
Another homeowner, Elinor Woods, uses the shutters to proof her home against the elements.
"I have them for several reasons," Woods said. "When the wind is very strong, the shutters keep the noise down and keep dust out. When you're trying to sleep at night and there is lightning, the shutters also keep the flash out of your face."
Woods, who moved to Las Vegas in 1994, had her home equipped with shutters because she traveled extensively.
The shutters also stop fading of furniture, carpet and drapes.
All parts are covered by a three-year warranty.
The company's showroom is situated at 6168 W. Charleston Blvd., west of Jones Boulevard. It is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
