Summerlin design maximizes parks, recreational facilities

With more than one-third of Summerlin's total acreage designated as open space, the master-planned community is home to thousands of acres of golf courses, parks, trails, and landscaped and natural areas.
According to Stew Gibbons, executive vice president of The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of Summerlin, that translates to eight golf courses, 10 major parks, more than 40 neighborhood parks, more than 40 completed miles of the Summerlin Trail System and hundreds of acres of open areas.
"Because the Summerlin master plan was created to maximize access to parks and trails for all residents, regardless of where in the community they live, recreational areas are abundant," Gibbons said. "Every Summerlin village is centered around a golf course or major park, while the trail system is designed to connect villages and provide scenic variety for walkers, joggers, cyclists and skaters."
According to Gibbons, most of the parks are developed around a different recreational theme. For example, The Crossing Park has two lighted soccer fields; The Trails Park is home to the Summerlin Little League with three lighted baseball fields; and The Arbors Tennis and Play Park features five lighted tennis courts and a pro shop.
The Hills Park hosts a full calendar of concerts, art shows and festivals, while The Pueblo Park features a winding desert trail that runs the length of the village. The Willows Park features lighted sports fields in addition to a swimming pool for residents and their guests, and Oxford Park is home to a sports field facility.
Two parks under development include a multisport facility in The Willows village, scheduled to open by the end of this year, and The Arbors Sports Park, a joint development of the Clark County School District, city of Las Vegas and Hughes Corp. It is home to a 40,000-square-foot community center owned and operated by the city of Las Vegas, as well as Palo Verde High School's sports facilities, including tennis and basketball courts, a football field, soccer field, and baseball and softball fields.
Summerlin has ranked as the nation's best-selling master-planned community seven of the past eight years, according to an independent survey.
The community is also home to a dozen schools, shopping centers, medical centers, business parks, houses of worship and more than 250 model homes.
Houses, townhomes and condominiums are priced from $90,000 to more than $700,000. Custom lots from one-quarter acre to one-third acre are priced from $80,000 to more than $300,000, and pre-designed custom homes built by featured builders are priced from $500,000 to more than $1 million.
To visit, take Summerlin Parkway to Town Center Drive and turn north, then east on Hillwood Drive. Or, take Sahara Avenue to Blue Willow Lane, west of Hualapai Way, and turn south.
Both home finding centers are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
