Temple moves scrolls to Green Valley Ranch

     Members of Midbar Kodesh Temple recently walked the Torah scrolls from the congregation's temporary building, along a 4.3-mile trail to their permanent home in a new 16,000-square-foot synagogue in the Green Valley Ranch master-planned community.
      The synagogue, the first ever built in the city of Henderson, is scheduled for official dedication in May. The Torah Walk is an ancient Jewish custom in which members of the temple carry the scrolls of the Jewish scriptures by hand to a new temple location. Placing the Torah inside the Ark officially completes the temple. Midbar Kodesh means "Holy Desert" in Hebrew.
      More than 150 congregation members participated in the Torah Walk, which began with elder (senior) members ceremoniously handing the sacred scrolls on to younger members, who then carried them and passed them along to other members stationed along the route. Many congregation members walked the entire route.
      The new temple building will house eight classrooms for a preschool, as well as afternoon and Sunday religious school. There is a social hall and sanctuary that can seat 600 people for various functions. A 50-person chapel will be used for more intimate settings and office space for the staff. A gift shop, bridal dressing room and tree-lined garden pathway to a gazebo are featured in phase one. The dairy kitchen will be complete in time for the move. The shell for the meat kitchen is available and will be outfitted in the months ahead.
      Green Valley Ranch was designed to provide opportunities for recreation and socialization. Facilities provide for baseball, soccer, basketball, tennis, biking and walking. The 1,310-acre community is highlighted by city parks, smaller neighborhood parks and a trail system.
      There are five active neighborhoods.
      Castle Rock Estates by Richmond American Homes offers homes that range from 1,673 to 2,355 square feet with as many as four bedrooms. Prices start in the mid-$150,000s.
      Mystic Bay, a gated neighborhood by Richmond American Homes, features homes that range from 2,103 to 3,263 square feet with as many as six bedrooms. Pricing begins in the $190,000s.
      Capital Pacific Homes' Meritage, also a gated neighborhood, offers homes ranging from 3,029 to 3,878 square feet with as many as six bedrooms. Pricing begins in the mid-$200,000s.
      Carriage Lane by U.S. Home is a gated neighborhood with floor plans that range from 2,550 to 4,500 square feet with as many as seven bedrooms. Prices start in the mid-$200,000s.
      The Estates at Green Valley Ranch by American Nevada Corp. is a series of custom-home neighborhoods. Home sites range from one-quarter acre to one-half acre and are priced from the $100,000s.
      Construction is under way for the Henderson Promenade and Special Events Plaza. Plans for the 38-acre facility include a 7,500-seat amphitheater, 70,000-square-foot community center and public library.
      A police substation opened last December.
      Plans include an outdoor swimming pool, activities pool and an indoor aquatic center.
      To visit, take Interstate 215 to Green Valley Parkway and proceed south into the community.
