Celebration marks beltway's expansion in Summerlin

Elected officials and representatives of companies involved in the Interstate 215 project gathered recently to celebrate the completion of another leg of the beltway. The leg stretches north from Sahara Avenue to Charleston Boulevard in Summerlin.

To mark the event, The Howard Hughes Corp., developer of the Summerlin master-planned community, and Sunrise Colony Co., developer of Red Rock Country Club and Siena in Summerlin, sponsored a golf chipping contest that pitted the elected officials and company representatives against leading junior golfers in Southern Nevada.

Among the participants were Hughes Corp. executive Kevin Orrock; Brad Church, head golf professional at Siena; and two Clark County commissioners.

Following the competition, Hughes Corp. and Sunrise Colony Co. donated $2,000 to the Southern Nevada Junior Golf Association.

"We wanted to do something to commemorate the fact that this portion of the beltway is just north of the gated, golf course communities of Red Rock Country Club and Siena in Summerlin, and leads to other fantastic golf courses within Summerlin," Dan Van Epp, president of Hughes Corp., said.

Hughes Corp. has been a major partner in the beltway project, providing nearly $60 million in property and excavation services to expedite its construction through Summerlin. In addition, the company developed and funded artistic enhancements to some of the overpasses.

Frank Countner, a Sunrise Colony Co. executive, is delighted about the opening of the beltway's newest leg.

"Residents of Red Rock Country Club and Siena are now just a few minutes from the heart of Summerlin and its wonderful amenities and services while also having convenient access to major transportation routes via the Summerlin Parkway," Countner said.

Summerlin is comprised of villages, each with its own major park or golf course.
